Saar: "Shas and Israel Beitenu Must Leave Government"

There are so many times that I wish I were an artist. I have a cartoon in my head that sums this all up. It is a picture of Olmert up a tree, holding Israel in one hand and a knife in the other. Below him are a large group of hungry alligators. He is cutting off huge bloody chunks of Israel and throwing them to the beasts, and the caption reads, “Here, that should satisfy you.”

Now I am thinking that I should amend this cartoon in my head to include representatives of those “religious” parties who care more about whether they can get welfare benefits and schools than whether Israel survives. They should be up the tree with Olmert, cutting off bloody chunks of Israel and saying to Olmert, “Is that enough to keep my seat? Do you think they need more? How about a little off the top?”

(IsraelNN.com) Calls are increasing for the Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu parties to resign from the governing coalition. The two parties have frequently come under fire for supporting the left-leaning coalition, but calls have increased following reports that the government is headed towards major territorial concessions.

According to the Yediot Acharonot newspaper, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas are secretly discussing changing the borders of Jerusalem, creating a passage linking Gaza to Judea and Samaria and allowing Arab immigrants into the territories.

"At a time when Olmert is playing around with national interests just in order to stay in power, Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu must stop clinging to their seats," said Likud faction head MK Gideon Saar. "There is no way that Olmert can reach a final status agreement without a mandate, without following proper government procedure and without consulting the security establishment. This is simply a joke," Saar added.
