(IsraelNN.com) The Education Ministry, headed by Yuli Tamir (Labor), has approved adding to the Arab school program the Arab version of the "tragedy" of the creation of the State Of Israel.

Arab nationalists call the War for Independence "Nakba," Arabic for "tragedy," and have asked that its version of the creation of the Jewish state be taught in their schools. The new directive includes the subject in the grade three textbook Living Together in Israel. It is written by Arabs who fled their home during the war and claim that Israel took their land.

The text also points out that Arab nations refused to accept the United Nations partition plan creating the Jewish state and a new Trans-Jordan country. Education Minister Tamir revealed that the change was made only after its omission was pointed out by Benny Begin, son of the late Prime Minister Menachem Begin.

Teaching the "Nakba" to Arabs is the latest in a number of dramatic moves by the Labor ministers, a left-wing professor who has campaigned against subsidies for Jewish religious education while backing Arab nationalist programs. Last year, she ordered that maps of Israel show the 1949 Armistice Line, which draws the borders of Israel as it existed before the Six-Day War in 1967.
