Report: Suha Arafat loses citizenship

Hmmm. Let me see, the day after it is revealed that Arafat might have died of AIDS, his "wife" has her citizenship revoked . . .

Oh, but I am sure it is all about this clandestine marriage, and not about that . . . right?

Yasser Arafat's widow Suha lost her Tunisian citizenship, the London-based Al-Quds al-Arabi reported Monday.

Reportedly, the instruction to withdraw Arafat's naturalized status comes from Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The Tunisian government did not state a reason for revoking the citizenship, but sources in the justice system said Arafat lost her "moral and material rights."

Arafat, who has been living with her daughter in Tunisia since the death of her husband in 2004, was naturalized in 2006. Al-Hayat, another London-based Arabic daily, reported that Suha Arafat left Tunisia last month. A reason for her leaving the country was not given.

But about a year ago, a Tunisian Web site reported that Arafat had secretly married Ben Ali's brother-in-law. It was rumored that the brother in law was supposed to marry Arafat's sister, but that he was "persuaded" to marry Suha because of her immense wealth.

Arafat denied the reports of the secret marriage. In August, she told Agence France Presse, "I strongly deny the reports that I married Balahsan el-Trabulsi. I'll sue the media outlets that published this false report."
