Shas Weanies Sold Yerushalyim for 478M Shekels!

I'm really starting to like Ovadia Yosef's son, Rabbi Yakov Yosef. He tears into Shas for staying in the government, and tells them they should leave immediately.

His arguments, and, of course, his message is about as close to my own as I could imagine. I guess there is hope for Sephardim if our leadership starts to come from such dynamic leaders as Rabbi Angel and Rabbi Yakov Yosef!

OK, just for fun (not because I really believe in this stuff), I looked up the Gematria of 478 (the amount in millions of Shekels, according to Rabbi Yakov Yosef, for which Shas sold Yerushalyim).

According to one website, 478 is the gematria of Osama Bin Laden. Here is the article on it. (Note: I don’t know the person who wrote this or the accuracy of the information, or even if the site is Kosher—so take everything with a grain of salt, OK?)

These Gematrias are the first two, the last and the seventh in the list of twenty from the Torah. The second, "Mahalath," is a proper name. Two of the Psalms are given this very name: 53 and 88.

As for Alphabetics, Strong's listing for 478 is ELISHAPHAT. It means "God of Judgment." The Greek entry is ANTIKATHISTEMI, meaning, "to set down (troops) against; withstand; resist." ELISHPHAT is the name of one of the captains of hundreds under King Jehoiada. Jehoiada made a covenant to restore righteousness:

"The Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, the people and the king, that they should be the LORD's people. And all the people went to the temple of Baal, and tore it down. They broke in pieces its altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. Also Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the LORD to the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned . . . . . JERUSALEM – In unprecedented criticism of his father, the son of the spiritual leader of a major coalition partner in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's government demanded his father's party immediately bolt the government amid rampant media reports Jerusalem is up for negotiations.

Rabbi Jacob Yosef accused the ultra-Orthodox Shas party of "selling Jerusalem" for 478 million Israeli shekels, or $138 million. Yosef's father, Rabbi Ovadye Yosef, serves as the spiritual leader of Shas, where he is also considered the party's more important and revered figure.

Earlier this month, the Knesset's Finance Committee approved $138 million in government funds to Shas' educational institutions as part of the party's coalition agreement with Olmert.

If Shas bolts, Olmert's coalition government could fall apart, precipitating new elections.

"How dare you sell out Jerusalem for 478 million shekels. Jerusalem is worth more than all monies in the world," said Jacob Yosef, rabbi of the Givat Mordechai neighborhood in Jerusalem, addressing his father's party.

Jacob Yosef is also a member of the Rabbinical Congress for Peace, a coalition of more than 350 Israeli rabbinic leaders and pulpit rabbis.

The Israeli Shas party has stated it would bolt the prime minister's coalition if it becomes clear the Israeli government is negotiating to cede of any part of Jerusalem.

Olmert repeatedly has insisted Israeli-Palestinian negotiations are not dealing with the status of Jerusalem, but Palestinian leaders, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abba, and many Israeli officials, including Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, have said in recent weeks negotiations are covering all core issues, including Jerusalem.

Yosef accused his father's party of staying in the government until a formal announcement regarding dividing Jerusalem is made, by which time, the rabbi said, it will be too late.

"When someone brings a rope to hang your child, will you say 'oh, it's nothing, he only brought a rope?' Or if a killer is only sharpening the knife, will you say, 'it's nothing, he's only sharpening the knife?' You will stop him right at the beginning because by the time the knife is on the throat it will be too late. What is Shas waiting for? It must leave the government right now," Yosef exclaimed.

Shas denies Jerusalem is being discussed during weekly Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which commenced after last November's U.S.-sponsored Annapolis summit.

"Nobody is talking about Jerusalem. The moment Jerusalem is being discussed, Shas will leave the government – period," Shas Spokesman Roi Lachmanovitch told Israel National News.

A Rabbinical Congress for Peace statement issued earlier this month said: "Every novice journalist and anyone listening to the news in Israel knows that giving up large chunks of Jerusalem has been on the negotiating table for quite some time and is in its advanced stages. Only the representatives of Shas are burying their heads in the ground and pretend they know of nothing."

"They are lying to themselves and deceiving their electorate. The Shas ministers know that Olmert and Abbas have agreed not to make public any agreement on Jerusalem until after the final signature in order to keep Shas in the government," said the RCP statement.

The statement was signed by scores of prominent rabbinic leaders here.

Since the Annapolis summit, which aimed to create a Palestinian state before the end of the year, senior negotiating teams including Livni and chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qureia have been meeting weekly while Olmert and Abbas meet biweekly.

Unlike previous Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in which both sides attended with about a dozen advisors each, Livni's and Quereai's teams are small, usually consisting at most of five people each. Media leaks from the current negotiations have been rare. Some momentum is highly expected before a visit Bush has scheduled to Israel in May, his second trip since Annapolis.

Olmert's government has hinted a number of times it will divide Jerusalem and reportedly has halted all Jewish construction permits for eastern sections of the city.

In December, Israeli Vice Premier Haim Ramon said the country "must" give up sections of Jerusalem for a future Palestinian state, even conceding the Palestinians can rename Jerusalem "to whatever they want."

"We must come today and say, friends, the Jewish neighborhoods, including Har Homa, will remain under Israeli sovereignty, and the Arab neighborhoods will be the Palestinian capital, which they will call Jerusalem or whatever they want," said Ramon during an interview.

Positions held by Ramon, a ranking member of Olmert's Kadima party, are largely considered to be reflective of Israeli government policy.

Olmert himself recently questioned whether it was "really necessary" to retain Arab-majority eastern sections of Jerusalem.

Israel recaptured eastern Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount – Judaism's holiest site – during the 1967 Six Day War. The Palestinians have claimed eastern Jerusalem as a future capital; the area has large Arab neighborhoods, a significant Jewish population and sites holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

About 231,000 Arabs live in Jerusalem, mostly in eastern neighborhoods, and many reside in illegally constructed complexes. The city has an estimated total population of 724,000.

Olmert to blame for dividing Jerusalem?

Ramon listed population statistics as the reason Olmert's government finds it necessary to split Jerusalem.

But WND broke the story that according to Jerusalem municipal employees, during 10 years as mayor of Jerusalem, Olmert instructed city workers not to take action against hundreds of illicit Arab building projects throughout eastern sections of Jerusalem housing over 100,000 Arabs squatting in the city illegally.

The workers and some former employees claim Olmert even instructed city officials to delete files documenting illegal Arab construction of housing units in eastern Jerusalem.

Olmert was Jerusalem mayor from 1993 to 2003. As mayor, he made repeated public statements calling Jerusalem the "eternal and undivided capital" of Israel. Jerusalem municipal employees and former workers, though, paint a starkly contrasting picture of the prime minister.

"He did nothing about rampant illegal Arab construction in Jerusalem while the government cracked down on illegal Jewish construction in the West Bank," said one municipal employee who worked under Olmert. She spoke on condition of anonymity, because she still works for the municipality.

One former municipal worker during Olmert's mayoral tenure told WND he was moved in 1999 to a new government posting after he tried to highlight the illegal Arab construction in Jerusalem. He also spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for his current job.

Aryeh King, chairman of the Jerusalem Forum, which promotes Jewish construction in Jerusalem, told WND an investigation by his group found Olmert's city hall deleted files documenting hundreds of illegal Arab building projects throughout eastern sections of Jerusalem. He said he forwarded his findings to Israel's state comptroller for investigation.

King also claims Olmert told senior municipal workers not to enforce a ban on illegal Arab buildings.

"Ehud Olmert gave the order not to deal with the problem and not to put Israeli security forces to the duty of taking down the illegal Arab complexes," said King. "Senior municipal workers told me Olmert said not to bother with the illegal Arab homes, because eventually eastern Jerusalem would be given to the Palestinian Authority."

King's report alleges Jerusalem municipal officials erased the files, which detail over 300 cases of Arab construction in eastern Jerusalem deemed illegal starting from 1999. The illegal buildings reportedly were constructed without permits and are still standing. According to law, they must be demolished.

Local media reports investigating King's charges alleged the files were erased by Ofir May, the head of Jerusalem's Department of Building Permits, with the specific intention of allowing the statute of limitation on enforcing the demolition of the illegal construction to run out.

The Jerusalem municipality released a statement in response to the allegations claiming the threat of Arab violence kept it from bulldozing the illegal Arab homes.

"During the years of the intifada, the municipality had difficulty carrying out the necessary level of enforcement in the neighborhoods of eastern Jerusalem due to security constraints," the statement read.

King said the hundreds of buildings allegedly detailed in the deleted municipal files house more than 20,000 illegal units.

"We're talking about perhaps 100,000 or more Arabs in eastern Jerusalem living in illegal homes with the government doing nothing about it," King said.

MKs: Pardon Omri Sharon, for his father's sake

Boo hoo. Omri Sharon wants to be pardoned for his father’s sake.

Tell me, what is done for the sake of the fathers who no longer have jobs, homes, or families because of Sharon’s destruction of Gush Katif? Who cries for them or worries about their welfare? Who worries about the welfare of children without homes, without schools, without communities? Who worried about mothers who cry for their children’s futures?

Tell me, what is done for the sake of the parents who no longer have children—whose children have died in Kassam fire, or whose children have been maimed?

Who weeps for the welfare of the families who sent their children to learn in Yeshiva, and who never saw them again?

These are the victims of Omri Sharon’s wicked bookkeeping. He is the paymaster of the traitorous acts of his father.

Leave him in jail to rot. If his father dies, so be it. He is a traitor to Israel and a traitor to his people. He should serve every minute.

Some 30 Knesset members, including six cabinet ministers, have signed a petition calling on President Shimon Peres to pardon Omri Sharon, said the organizer of the petition, Deputy Foreign Minister Majallie Whbee, on Monday.

The petition said, "We, the undersigned, members of the Knesset, appeal to you to give positive consideration to granting a pardon to Mr. Omri Sharon to enable him to remain at his father's bedside."

Among the petition's signatories were cabinet ministers Shaul Mofaz, Gideon Ezra, Ya'acov Edri, Shalom Simhon, Ze'ev Boim and Ruhama Avraham-Balila.

MKs who signed included Tzahi Hanegbi, Moshe Gafni, Otniel Schneller, Yoel Hasson, Ronit Tirosh, Yoram Marciano, Orit Noked, Nissim Ze'ev and Yitzhak Ziv.

No Likud MKs agreed to sign the petition.

The statement continued, "We don't take lightly Omri Sharon's actions, for which he was convicted and sentenced to seven months in jail.

However, we believe that the fact that he had not been put on trial previously for a similar crime, and given the medical condition of Ariel Sharon, who has been in a coma for more than two years, and the fact that his son Omri's absence could cause him to lose hope and shorten his life, make it essential in this case to ease his punishment so that he may continue to sit at his father's bedside."

Sharon was convicted in Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court on February 13, 2006 on charges of making false entries into the documents of a corporate body, taking a false oath and violating the Political Parties Law.

The charges had to do with illegal contributions made by mysterious foreign donors to his father's primary campaign for leadership of the Likud Party in September 1999. Omri Sharon did not register the contribution and kept a separate and secret account of the true income and expenditures of the campaign. Sharon appealed the verdict and in June 2006, Tel Aviv District Court reduced the sentence to seven months but rejected his request to serve his time by performing public service.

He entered Ma'asiyahu Prison on February 26. Almost immediately afterwards, calls began to be made for his release. Last week, Finance Minister Ronnie Bar-On submitted a request to Peres and Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann to pardon Omri Sharon. However, Bar-On said he made the request as a private citizen and wrote it on his personal stationery.

The "Mandate for Palestine" & the Law of War

Ban Ki-moon, Condoleezza Rice, and Javier Solana became victims to the 'Occupation' mantra their own organization has repeated over and over in their propaganda campaign to legitimize the Arab position.

The "Road Map" vision, as well as continuous pressure from the "Quartet" (U.S., the European Union, the UN and Russia) to surrender parts of the Land of Israel are contrary to international law that firmly call to "encourage ... close settlement by Jews on the land, including State lands and waste lands not required for public purposes." It also requires "seeing that no Palestine territory shall be ceded or leased to, or in any way placed under the control of the government of any foreign power."

Any attempt to negate the Jewish people's right to Palestine - Eretz-Israel, and to deny them access and control in the area designated for the Jewish people by the League of Nations is a serious infringement of international law.

International Law- The "Mandate for Palestine"

The "Mandate for Palestine" an historical League of Nations document, laid down the Jewish legal right under international law to settle anywhere in western Palestine, the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, an entitlement unaltered in international law. Fifty-one member countries - the entire League of Nations - unanimously declared on July 24, 1922:

"Whereas recognition has been given to the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country."

On June 30, 1922, a joint resolution of both Houses of Congress of the United States unanimously endorsed the "Mandate for Palestine":

"Favoring the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.

"Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the United States of America favors the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which should prejudice the civil and religious rights of Christian and all other non-Jewish communities in Palestine, and that the holy places and religious buildings and sites in Palestine shall be adequately protected." [italics in the original]


Law of War - Arab Unlawful Acts of Aggression in 1948

Six months before the War of Independence in 1948, Palestinian Arabs launched a series of riots, pillaging, and bloodletting. Then came the invasion of seven Arab armies from neighboring states attempting to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state in accordance with the UN's 1947 recommendation to Partition Palestine, a plan the Arabs rejected.

The Jewish state not only survived, it came into possession of territories - land from which its adversaries launched their first attempt to destroy the newly created State of Israel.

Israel's citizens understood that defeat meant the end of their Jewish state before it could even get off the ground. In the first critical weeks of battle, and against all odds, Israel prevailed on several fronts.

The metaphor of Israel having her back to the sea reflected the image crafted by Arab political and religious leaders' rhetoric and incitement. Already in 1948 several car bombs had killed Jews, and massacres of Jewish civilians underscored Arab determination to wipe out the Jews and their state.

6,000 Israelis died as a result of that war, in a population of 600,000. One percent of the Jewish population was gone. In American terms, the equivalent is 3 million American civilians and soldiers killed over an 18-month period.

Israel's War of Independence in 1948 was considered lawful and in self-defence as may be reflected in UN resolutions naming Israel a "peace loving State" when it applied for membership at the United Nations. Both the Security Council (4 March, 1949, S/RES/69) and the UN General Assembly (11 May, 1949, (A/RES/273 (III)) declared:

"[Security Council] Decides in its judgment that Israel is a peace-loving State and is able and willing to carry out the obligations contained in the Charter ..."


Arab Unlawful Acts of Aggression in 1967
In June 1967, the combined armies of Egypt, Syria, and Jordan attacked Israel with the clear purpose expressed by Egypt's President: "Destruction of Israel." At the end of what is now known as the Six-Day War, Israel, against all odds, was victorious and in possession of the territories of Judea and Samaria [E.H., The West Bank], Sinai and the Golan Heights.

International law makes a clear distinction between defensive wars and wars of aggression. More than half a century after the 1948 War, and more than four decades since the 1967 Six-Day War, it is hard to imagine the dire circumstances Israel faced and the price it paid to fend off its neighbors' attacks.

Who Starts Wars Does Matter
Professor, Judge Stephen M. Schwebel, past President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) states the following facts:

"The facts of the June 1967 'Six Day War' demonstrate that Israel reacted defensively against the threat and use of force against her by her Arab neighbors. This is indicated by the fact that Israel responded to Egypt's prior closure of the Straits of Tiran, its proclamation of a blockade of the Israeli port of Eilat, and the manifest threat of the UAR's [The state formed by the union of the republics of Egypt and Syria in 1958] use of force inherent in its massing of troops in Sinai, coupled with its ejection of UNEF.

"It is indicated by the fact that, upon Israeli responsive action against the UAR, Jordan initiated hostilities against Israel. It is suggested as well by the fact that, despite the most intense efforts by the Arab States and their supporters, led by the Premier of the Soviet Union, to gain condemnation of Israel as an aggressor by the hospitable organs of the United Nations, those efforts were decisively defeated.

"The conclusion to which these facts lead is that the Israeli conquest of Arab and Arab-held territory was defensive rather than aggressive conquest."

Judge Sir Elihu Lauterpacht wrote in 1968, one year after the 1967 Six-Day War:

"On 5th June, 1967, Jordan deliberately overthrew the Armistice Agreement by attacking the Israeli-held part of Jerusalem. There was no question of this Jordanian action being a reaction to any Israeli attack. It took place notwith,standing explicit Israeli assurances, conveyed to King Hussein through the U.N. Commander, that if Jordan did not attack Israel, Israel would not attack Jordan.

"Although the charge of aggression is freely made against Israel in relation to the Six-Days War the fact remains that the two attempts made in the General Assembly in June-July 1967 to secure the condemnation of Israel as an aggressor failed. A clear and striking majority of the members of the U.N. voted against the proposition that Israel was an aggressor."

Israel Has the Better Title to the Territory of What Was Palestine, Including the Whole of Jerusalem
International law makes it clear: All of Israel's wars with its Arab neighbors were in self-defence.

Professor, Judge Schwebel, wrote in What Weight to Conquest:

"(a) a state [Israel] acting in lawful exercise of its right of self-defense may seize and occupy foreign territory as long as such seizure and occupation are necessary to its self-defense;
"(b) as a condition of its withdrawal from such territory, that State may require the institution of security measures reasonably designed to ensure that that territory shall not again be used to mount a threat or use of force against it of such a nature as to justify exercise of self-defense;
"(c) Where the prior holder of territory had seized that territory unlawfully, the state which subsequently takes that territory in the lawful exercise of self-defense has, against that prior holder, better title.

"... as between Israel, acting defensively in 1948 and 1967, on the one hand, and her Arab neighbors, acting aggressively, in 1948 and 1967, on the other, Israel has the better title in the territory of what was Palestine, including the whole of Jerusalem, than do Jordan and Egypt."

"No legal Right Shall Spring from a Wrong"
Professor Schwebel explains that the principle of "acquisition of territory by war is inadmissible" must be read together with other principles:

"... namely, that no legal right shall spring from a wrong, and the Charter principle that the Members of the United Nations shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State."

Simply stated: Arab illegal aggression against the territorial integrity and political independence of Israel, cannot and should not be rewarded.

Professor Julius Stone, a leading authority on the Law of Nations, stated:

"Territorial Rights Under International Law.... By their [Arab countries] armed attacks against the State of Israel in 1948, 1967, and 1973, and by various acts of belligerency throughout this period, these Arab states flouted their basic obligations as United Nations members to refrain from threat or use of force against Israel's territorial integrity and political independence. These acts were in flagrant violation inter alia of Article 2(4) and paragraphs (1), (2), and (3) of the same article."

Thus, under international law Israel acted lawfully by exercising its right to self-defence when it redeemed and legally reoccupied Judea and Samaria, known also as the West Bank.


Legalities aside, before 1967 there were no Jewish settlements in the West Bank, and for the first ten years of so-called occupation there were almost no Jewish settlers in the West Bank. And still there was no peace with the Palestinians. The notion that Jewish communities pose an obstacle to peace is a red herring designed to blame Israel for lack of progress in the 'Peace Process' and enable Palestinian leadership to continue to reject any form of compromise and reconciliation with Israel as a Jewish state.

Hamas and Fatah are falling all over themselves to laud terrorists who have killed and maimed innocent Jews. Fatah is no "peace partner." We knew they weren't, but Olmert and Rice and Blair have done their best to pretend that the terrorists aren't terrorists.

JERUSALEM – An official delegation from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah organization this weekend visited the mourning tent of a senior Fatah terrorist accused by security officials here of planning the Jerusalem seminary shooting massacre two weeks ago in which eight students were killed.

The terrorist, Muhammad Shehadi, was eliminated in Bethlehem in an Israeli anti-terror operation last Thursday. The Israeli media has been portraying Shehadi as a senior leader from the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad terrorist organization even though Shehadi is a well-known Fatah activist.

"Of course he was Fatah," PA minister and Fatah Legislative Council member Qadura Fares told WND. "We were even in jail together as Fatah members."

Fares was among a delegation of eight other Fatah members who visited the Shehadi family's mourning tent in Bethlehem. Others included Kamal Hassouneh the PA Economic Minister, and Azzam el-Ahmad, a PA parliament member and a member of Fatah's Revolutionary Council. Fadwa Barghouti, wife of imprisoned Fatah leader and intifada architect Marwan Barghouti, was also present.

According to a Fatah source in the mourning tent, the Fatah delegation promised to rebuild the Shehadi family home after Israel bulldozed the house immediately following the notorious attack in which a terrorist gunman two weeks ago infiltrated the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva, located near the entrance to Jerusalem, and fired hundreds of rounds of bullets at students studying in the building's main library.

Immediately following the massacre, which was carried out by an Arab resident of eastern Jerusalem, WND quoted senior Israeli and Palestinian security officials stating Shehadi planned the massacre from the West Bank city of Bethlehem on behalf of the Hezbollah terrorist group.

Israeli forces raided Bethlehem two weeks ago and demolished Shehadi's house, but the terrorist remained at large until Thursday, when Israeli forces killed Shehadi along with three other gunmen, including Ahmed Dalbul, a Bethlehem-area leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Fatah's declared military wing.

According to security officials speaking to WND, Shehadi was killed after the Israeli military received intelligence he was scheduled to attend a Fatah planning meeting in Bethlehem.

Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported Shehadi was "the commander of Islamic Jihad in the Bethlehem area," and was killed along with "two other Islamic Jihad members." Israel's Channel 2 identified Shehadi as Islamic Jihad.

None of the Israeli media reports described Shehadi as working for Fatah.

A senior Palestinian security official speaking to WND said Shehadi continued to work with Islamic Jihad sporadically but he was more identified with Fatah.

"He was Fatah," said the security official. "In the last few weeks, he was working only with Fatah. Islamic Jihad might consider him among their men in Bethlehem, but it's absolutely wrong for Haaretz to label him as the Islamic Jihad commander."

The U.S. considers Fatah to be moderate. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's government has been holding regular negotiations with Abbas' officials in line with last November's U.S.-backed Annapolis Summit, which seeks to create a Fatah-led Palestinian state by the end of the year.

The Purim That Almost Wasn't

As Jews worldwide prepare for Purim, few realize that had there been newspapers at the time of Mordekhai and Ester, the headlines would have read something like "Rabbis Reject New Holiday", "Mordekhai Blasted as Reformer" or "Council of Torah Sages Fears Gentile Reaction".

No, this is not "‘Purimshpiel". This is absolutely for real - and the facts are recorded, quite explicitly, in the Meghillah (the Book of Ester) and the Talmudh.


Purim: a New Paradigm
Torah sages are by nature conservative. Prior to the events of Purim, the only festivals known were those mandated in the Torah. When a respected Jewish leader (Mordekhai) and a young Jewish woman (Queen Ester) insisted that a new festival be instituted, and that a new book be added to the Bible in its honor - a revolution in the spiritual life of the Jewish people was set in motion: "Forty eight prophets and seven prophetesses arose in Israel, and they did not add to nor detract from that which is written in the Torah with the exception of the reading of the Meghillah" (Babylonian Talmudh Meghillah 14a).

Many of the Sages were opposed to the newfangled notion of Purim as we learn in the Babylonian Talmudh (Meghillah 7a): "Ester sent [a letter] to the Sages: ‘Establish me (i.e. Purim) for future generations'. They replied: ‘You will only cause us strife with the Nations!' (who will say that we rejoice at their downfall - Rashi). She replied: ‘I (i.e. the events of Purim) am recorded in the royal archives of Madhai and Persia' (and the Gentiles will in any event know - Rashi)..... Ester sent [a second letter] to the Sages: ‘Write me up for future generations' (i.e. add the Meghillah to the Bible)".

It would seem, based on this Babylonian account, that fear of the Nations was the Sages' major concern. However, as is often the case, it is the Jerusalem Talmudh that elucidates the core issue:

...R. Shemuel bar Nahman reported in the name of R. Yohanan: ‘Eighty five sages, over thirty of whom were prophets, were greatly vexed by this matter [of instituting Purim and including the Meghillah in the Bible]. They reasoned thus: It is written: ‘These are the Misswoth that HASHEM commanded Moshe' (Wayiqra 27:34). These are the Misswoth we were commanded by Moshe, and thus said Moshe: ‘No other prophet shall henceforth introduce something new'. And [yet] Mordekhai and Ester wish to innovate?! They continued to consider the matter until the Holy One Blessed be He opened their eyes, and they discovered [that a source for Purim] was hinted at in the Torah, the Prophets and the Writings..." (Meghillah 1:5).

The Crux of the Matter
Fear of gentile reaction was, evidently, a partial excuse at best. The crux of the matter was a clash of Torah philosophies: was halakha sacrosanct and immutable, or could it occasionally evolve to fit the necessities of Torah life, to better to serve HASHEM's purpose and the needs of the Jewish people?

These two schools of thought have coexisted throughout our history. The most obvious examples, perhaps, are the sages Hillel and Shammai and the two schools they founded. The School of Shammai was conservative with a rigid halakhic approach. The School of Hillel was more lenient and willing to consider innovation.

The Mishnah relates that when Hillel saw the plight of the common people who were unable to receive loans from the wealthy classes due to the approaching Sabbatical year (when all loans would be forfeit) - thereby nullifying the Torah commandment "If there be among you a needy man, one of your brethren, within any of your gates, in your Land which HASHEM your God gives you. You shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand against your brother in need. Rather you shall surely open your hand for him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need" (Devarim 15:7-8) - he introduced the radical reform known as Prozbul, which turned over the debts to the beth din (Jewish court) and enabled the circumvention of the annulment of debts (Shevi'ith 10:3).

The Split and the Royal ‘We'
The Purim episode resulted in a split among the Sages, which fact is alluded to in the following statement: "‘For Mordekhai the Jew was second to King Ahashwerosh, great among the Jews, and accepted by the majority of his brethren' (Ester 10:3) - ‘the majority of his brethren' and not his all his brethren. This teaches us that some of the Sanhedrin [i.e. his brethren] distanced themselves from him (Mordekhai)" (BT Meghillah 16b).

If the truth be told, Purim only entered the Jewish calendar due to royal intervention. And so we read:

And Mordekhai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews that were in all the provinces of king Ahashwerosh, both near and far, to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adhar, and the fifteenth day of the same, each year (Ester 9:20-21).... Then Ester the queen, the daughter of Avihayil, and Mordekhai the Jew, wrote in the strongest possible terms to confirm this second letter of Purim.... to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordekhai the Jew and Ester the queen had enjoined them... And Ester's proclamation confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was entrusted to writing (Ester 9:29-32).

Initially Mordekhai wrote in his name alone, but this proved insufficient. He needed the ‘royal we'. "This passage informs us that the Jews kept this misswah [of Purim initially] but later relinquished it. Mordekhai therefore needed Ester to proclaim it, as she was the queen.... it was not established for all time until Ester published it in writing" (R. Avraham Ibn Ezra, ad loc).

Mordekhai, Hillel, and Torath Erets Yisrael
And so it has been ever since. In every generation there are Torah scholars who adopt a Shammai-like approach - their main concern is traditionalism, maintaining that which was. On the other hand, every generation also produces great Torah minds, rabbis who take the longer view and are able to perceive new needs and challenges and formulate an appropriate response.

Let us not forget, too, that the Jewish people are just coming out of a 2000-year Exile. Like a patient awaking from an extended coma, we need to take stock of our situation, refamiliarize ourselves with our natural surroundings and relearn many things that were once instinctive.

"But isn't that like Reform Judaism?" some ask. Not at all. Reform Judaism simply bends to whim and convenience. As opposed to such flippancy, change and innovation in response to new/old realities, based on authentic halakhic sources and reasoning, and aimed at furthering the goals of the Torah itself - as with Hillel's Prozbul or Mordekhai's Purim - are not merely legitimate but are the very life-blood of the Oral Tradition and halakhic process.

Making changes to received Jewish practice is a delicate matter to be sure. The rule of thumb is "if it works, don't fix it" - but what our leaders do when it doesn't work? Mordekhai and Hillel serve as the paradigm; the revolution begun by Mordekhai and Ester was continued by Hillel and his disciples. And the House of Hillel, as we know, eventually won the day, setting the course for the Jewish people for future generations.




Rabbi Bans Hiring Arab Labor

Why did it take so long to do this? It seems this should have been common sense long ago!!

And, to those who would say, "Oh, those poor arabs! This mean rabbi is making innocent arabs suffer for the actions of one terrorist," I would say: Good.

I hope they suffer. If they suffer, if this hits them in the pocket book and makes them hungry, perhaps they will have had enough of the terrorists and start turning them in and getting them out of their communities and their mosques. Perhaps they will stop talking about killing Jews and start talking about building trust.

Until now, we have see arabs celebrating Jewish deaths, dancing in the streets when innocent boys die. Let's see what they do when they can't get a job. Maybe the economic reality will be more motivating than anything else.

Meanwhile, look for the rabbi to be jailed or sued for speaking the truth. This happens to anyone in Israel who dares admit the emperor is naked.

We are at war with these people, and Condi Rice, Peres, and Olmert can't change those facts on the ground no matter what they do.

Peace doesn't come through negotiation to prevent war. Peace comes from crushing the enemy until they capitulate, then negotiating the surrender.

Top Hareidi Rabbi Bans Arab Labor Following Merkaz HaRav Attack

(IsraelNN.com) Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, considered a top Torah sage of the generation in the Hareidi-Religious community, issued a Jewish legal decision banning the employment of Arab workers by Jews according to the Yom Chadash daily.

The rabbi issued the decision at a meeting with several administrators of yeshivas in B’nei Brak. The administrators told the rabbi that they had under they employ an older Arab man who they do not suspect of any involvement in terrorism. The administrators decided, nonetheless to seek halachic (Jewish legal) guidance following reports that the terrorist who carried out the massacre at Jerusalem’s Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva had been hired as a driver on occasion.

“According to Jewish law, it is completely forbidden to hire Arabs, especially in yeshivas,” Rabbi Kanievsky said. “There is a concern of endangering lives.”

The rabbi continued, explaining, “After all, we are at war with them…and are there not Jews that can work and make a living?”

Asked later on if his words should be publicized, Rabbi Kanievsky said: “Certainly,” according to News First Class, investigative journalist Yoav Yitzchak's news site.

Rabbi Kanievsky went even further, saying that Jews should refrain from employing any non-Jews, not just Muslim Arabs, and instead grant livelihood to Jews, unless there exists a huge disparity between the costs of the labor.

The rabbi's family told Arutz-7 that the Yom Chadash report is 100% accurate and explained that "although there can be financial justification for hiring foreign workers, G-d forbid should we hire Arabs. We are at war with them."

Rabbi Kanievsky is one of the most recognized authorities in Hareidi-religious society. He is the son of the Steipler Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Kanievsky, and the son-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the leader of Lithuanian Hareidi Jewry.

Avoda Ivrit Hotline Set Up
For several years a revival of the concept of Avoda Ivrit – Jewish labor – has been taking place in the Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria regions – particularly in hilltop communities. The concept was touted by Labor Zionists in the pre- and early state eras as an important Jewish value in reconnecting to the land and being truly independent. Though a web site listing Jewish labor businesses was closed down after a law-suit from an Arab advocacy group funded by the New Israel Fund, a new hotline and email account has been set up to provide Avoda Ivrit solutions.

The hotline allows consumers to receive a list of businesses in a particular field that only use Jewish workers. People are also encouraged to submit the names of such businesses to the hotline.

Jew Town’s disappearing community

Is this a bad thing or a good thing? Obviously, it is sad to see a community disappear--especially one that shows the historically important role of Jews in the communities where few would thing Jews existed.

However, on the other hand, this community has moved to Israel--where they add to the diversity of Jewish experience and thought, where they help fill the land and claim it for our people.

Unlike the synagogues in Europe that have become museums because of the wholesale destruction of Jewish lives and the secularization of the society as a whole, this group's synagogue may become a museum for an entirely different reason: because they maintained their traditions long enough to return to Israel.

That is a beautiful thing.

Our tour of Kerala, in the southern part of India, brought us to Fort Cochin. Since ancient times Kerala has been the center of the Indian spice trade where Greeks, Romans, Jews, Arabs and Chinese vied for its trade. According to legend, the first Jews arrived here in 70CE, just after the destruction of the second Temple.

The Maharaja of Travancore and Cochin gave shelter to the Jewish community here after the Moorish Arabs attacked them in 1524 due to their trade monopoly. They were given an area right opposite the Maharajah’s palace, which subsequently became known as Jew Town. It was here, at the end of a narrow cobbled road that they built the Pardesi synagogue in 1568.

It is one of the oldest synagogues in the world and has functioned undisturbed throughout the ages. According to the seven Jews left in Jew Town today, no other society in the world has embraced Jews with such hospitality, allowing them to live in peace and mutual respect for so long.

The Cochin Jews were comprised of two groups: The largest were known as the “Meyuhassim” or Malabari Jews, whose forefathers are believed to have arrived in India as merchants during the time of King Solomon. The second group is known as the Pardesi Jews, who primarily came from Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Spain and Germany.

The two groups lived in the towns of Cochin, Aluva, North Paravur and Ernakulum where they built eight beautiful and thriving synagogues which functioned throughout the ages until mass emigration to Israel in the 1950s.

Cochin Jews, who spoke a dialect called Judeo-Malayalam, a mix of Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Hebrew, adapted themselves so well to the Hindu way of life that they even adopted caste behavior by dividing themselves into sub-castes. Hence, these groups were often referred to by their color: The “Meyuhassim” Jews were known as the “black” Jews, some 50 of whom still live in Ernakulum today, and the “Pardesi” Jews, who were more influential and known as the “white” Jews, only seven of whom remain in Fort Cochin’s Jew Town today.

The two groups did not mix, and those who were not part of the “white” sub-caste were not allowed to marry into the community. Within the last few decades, however, all religious divisions have disappeared, but so has most of the community.

Emigration to Israel, which began in 1950 and peaked during the 1970’s has almost decimated this once thriving community. Large groups have settled in Moshav Nevatim in the Negev and Moshav Yuval in the North, in the Katamon neighborhood in Jerusalem, in Beersheba, Dimona and Yeruham, where they have set up their own synagogues.

Inside the synagogue
Adhering to Hindu tradition, which has blended so harmoniously with Jewish tradition here, we removed our shoes before entering the synagogue. Amongst the prize possessions inside is a copper plate granted to the Jewish trading community by Raja Ravi Varman (962-1020). Our guide recited the age and source of each of the crystal chandeliers, and explained that the blue and white willow-patterned floor tiles had been imported from a Jewish community in China during the 15th century.

Until recently the synagogue held regular services (Sephardi Orthodox) using the small but steady stream of tourists to make a minyan for prayer, this is no longer the case and services are held only during the high holidays and when a minyan is randomly gathered from among Jewish tourists.

As Anil our guide locked up the synagogue gates with great care, we strolled down the narrow road, whose shop windows all displayed Jewish artifacts and names. Further down the road we met Anas, lugging his pushcart full of postcards depicting the synagogue, which we were not allowed to photograph from the inside.

We caught the first glimpse of 80-year-old Sarah Cohen through the colorfully designed ironwork of her windows, which unabashedly displayed blue Stars of David. Wearing a flower printed housedress, flip-flops and a scarf covering her grey curls, she was sitting serenely by the window reading from her bible; it seemed nothing could disturb her calm.

Our guide had met Sarah several times and he walked inside her open doorway for a polite chat in Malayalam. It was somewhat strange watching what seemed like a “typical Jewish European grandmother” speaking the local dialect so naturally. Sarah, it turned out, has no children and her husband recently passed away.

She was unperturbed by the flow of our group’s eight women who followed Anil in through the doorway; she was used to being interviewed and has had her photos taken on many occasions. She bemoaned the fact that the community has dwindled to such an extent that there are no longer enough people for a minyan at the synagogue. Sarah said it's only a matter of time before the Jews of Cochin completely disappear, and with them the unique mix of Indian and Jewish culture.


"This will become a museum, not a functioning synagogue," she said sadly. When that happens, she said, history can record that this Jewish community’s emigration was not motivated by intolerance or discrimination by India, we have always been welcomed here. We asked Sarah why she has decided to stay behind when the majority of the community had made aliyah to Israel:

"How could we leave? We are Indians, too. Why should we leave the only place we have known as home?" she said as she rhythmically swayed her head sideways in the typical Indian manner.

To keep herself busy during weekdays and to make a small income, Sarah Cohen embroiders kippahs and sells them to the Jewish tourists who frequent this “dying community.”

Keeping kosher the Indian way
As we strolled further down the road, we came across lifetime Cochin resident, 85-year-old Yossef Halegua, whose own family arrived here in 1592 from Spain. He and his wife Juliette were spending their leisurely Shabbat afternoon sitting on the verandah of their home which was built in 1761, and which faces the bustling street. Unfolding his tales of life in Cochin to his eager listeners, Yossef said there has never been any Indian anti-Semitism in Cochin. Juliette, Yossef’s beautiful, pale skinned, blue- eyed wife told us that their daughter had nonetheless immigrated to Israel and currently lives in Givat Ada.

We asked Yossef and his wife about the difficulties of maintaining a kosher home, and he replied that indeed they do keep kosher, but that they are also Indian, adding that they use an Indian flatbread rather than the braided challah bread for Shabbat. Yossef also said that the Jewish community here does not eat beef out of respect for the Hindu prohibition.

In its heyday there were two synagogues in Fort Cochin, but the only functioning one today is the Pardesi Synagogue, which is a state protected heritage site. The religious artifacts of this second synagogue were brought to Israel in their entirety during the 50s and are currently housed in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem while the Holy Ark is being preserved for future generations at the religious kibbutz of Nehalim.

The average age of the community in Jew Town is close to 90, and as per Sarah Cohen’s words “the Pardesi synagogue will inevitably turn into a museum within the next few years”, one that will display a rare case of Jewish coexistence.

Memo to Facebook: There is no such thing as "Palestine."

When Israel was created, we changed the name of our land from the Roman slur "Palestine" (that England, in it's anti-semitic way had continued to refer to us), to the proper name "Israel." When we restored the proper name to our land, and returned our people to the land of their ancestors, "Palestine" no longer existed.

It still does not exist.

No matter how much you hate Israel, Facebook, it still exists. It is still filled with Jews. It is obstinately and continuously present, successful, and growing.

'Ma'aleh Adumim, Palestine'

Ma'aleh Adumim resident Julian Czarny woke up recently to discover that he lived in "Palestine" - at least according to the popular Internet social networking site Facebook.

Facebook no longer allows members from Ma'aleh Adumim, Ariel, Betar Illit and other settlements over the Green Line to list their hometowns as situated in Israel, but instead provides only a preset location, with their country listed as "Palestine."

"Someone at Facebook is simply prejudging whatever may or may not come about in future negotiations," said Czarny. "Who exactly decided on this computerized transfer of over a quarter-million Jews from Israel to Palestine?"

Fellow Ma'aleh Adumim resident and Facebook user Seth Vogelman also found his country of residence changed from "Israel" to "Palestine."

"I don't think what they've decided to do is coming from a misunderstanding," Vogelman said. "It could be nefarious, but I think this is a reflection of the fact that what's going on in Israel is distorted in the American media.

"What does Facebook do? They proudly tout themselves as a forum of freedom of expression. But by this act, they negate their own raison d'etre of how people express themselves. If this were an issue involving homosexuals, I doubt they would curtail anything we're doing. But because it has to do with Jews returning to their homeland and expressing their Jewish identity, Facebook feels they can limit freely without any qualms."

Facebook defines itself as "a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them."

The move to seemingly impose geopolitical borders on users comes as the network is under fire for increasingly controversial sentiments being circulated throughout its site.

Various groups on the site call for the destruction of Israel, and last week, a group was created celebrating the "martyrdom" of the terrorist who perpetrated the shooting attack at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem. That group is still in existence on Facebook.

Another group, called "Facebook-stop discriminating Yesha!" has been established in protest of the site's apparent territorial decisions. The group's description cites the fact that "It's no longer possible to list any yishuv in Yesha as your hometown," and calls on Facebook to stop the alleged discrimination.

One group member, Neriel Maarek, posted a comment on the group's page, citing a response she received from Facebook after writing to them to complain. The response, which could not be verified by The Jerusalem Post, reads, "Thanks for expressing your concerns to us. We understand that Facebook's geographical classifications are not satisfactory to all of our users. We are currently working on new ways to address this issue, and we hope you will bear with us as we work towards a solution that will be acceptable to everyone involved."

Efrat resident David Curwin, a member of the "Yesha" group, told the Post that his community suddenly wasn't listed on Facebook at all. He e-mailed the Web site to complain and received a response similar to Maarek's: "Facebook's geographical data is currently drawn from the UN. We understand, however, that the UN's geographical classifications are not satisfactory to all of our users," etc.

"I don't think Facebook was aware of the political ramifications in limiting choices for hometowns," Curwin told the Post. "I think they wanted to list as many countries as possible for marketing purposes, and consulted the UN. I do believe that the UN has a political bias, but I don't think the average person thinks of the UN as biased. Here, we are more aware of that."

Facebook did not return e-mails from the Post by press time, and a working telephone number to contact the Web site is not available. But many feel that the continued policy of listing certain Israeli towns as located in "Palestine" and omitting other Israeli towns entirely does say something about Facebook's political leanings.

"Facebook and other similar social networking sites were set up to encourage friendship," Czarny said. "Can it be called friendly when the supposedly liberal managers of Facebook unilaterally change the map of Israel in such a way that takes no account of the realities on the ground?"

Now, not only has Tzvia shown that the Israeli “Justice System” is lynching innocent right-wing religious Jews, not only has she shown the world that with Torah she can withstand the government’s disgusting and degrading treatment, but she has now made the Israeli justice system recognize the Sanhedrin!

Wow. I was hoping this would happen. I even suggested it in my blog a few weeks back.

We move closer and closer to the days of the Moschiac. Perhaps this will be the breakthrough that we need for the Sanhedrin to gain legitimacy throughout the world and grow in esteem and power. And, G-d willing, replace this corrupt system of the Rabbinate.

(IsraelNN.com) Tzvia Sariel of Elon Moreh, who has been held in jail since December for refusing to recognize the authority of the secular court system, was allowed to testify before a Torah court set up by the nascent Sanhedrin Friday. The Sanhedrin Court for Matters of People and State ordered her immediate release.

The court, headed by Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, heard Sariel’s testimony after a judge from Netanya’s Magistrates Court ordered that she be allowed to attend the hearing on the limits of the youth’s struggle against the Israeli judicial system. It is presumed that Netanya Magistrates Court Judge Samdar Abramovitch hoped the Sanhedrin court would instruct Sariel to put and end to her struggle and recognize the civil courts.

The Court For Matters of People and State also heard testimony from the girl’s mother, as well as Shmuel Medad of the Honenu legal assistance organization. The court concluded that Sariel’s right to refuse to recognize Israel’s current justice system is justified and ruled that the only limitation to the struggle is the ability of each individual to withstand the difficulties of prison. The court also ordered that Sariel be released immediately, without any limitations. "Every day and every hour that Tzvia Sariel spends behind bars is a wrongdoing to this girl," Rabbi Ariel ruled. "Justice demands to release her immediately. It is a serious stain on the judiciary system in Israel. According to the Torah law of Israel, we are demanding her immediate release without conditions and to erase the indictment."

The hearing was marked by uncertainty over legal procedure, according to IsraelJustice.com. "Attorneys did not understand what role was given to the rabbinical court in a criminal case and whether the rabbis were granted any authority over the civil court judge who approved the procedure. Usually, Rabbinical courts are only authorized to hear cases that concern marriage and divorce. "There is a question of authorities," Honenu's Meidad explained.

Sariel was arrested in December and has been held for three months for allegedly pushing an Arab who entered her town to pick olives. Judges decided to keep her in prison without formal charges after she refused to cooperate with the secular justice system. Sariel, 18, remains in prison even after two Arab men, witnesses called by the prosecution, testified that she was not involved in the alleged physical assault.

Jabber Mahmoud Hussein, called to the stand by the Prosecution, said: "I managed to come to court twice, despite the fact that the accused didn't hit me or do anything bad to us at all...we are prepared to close this case because all we want is to harvest olives in peace."

Precedent: State of Israel Recognizes Sanhedrin
The Sanhedrin court called for the establishment of a committee to act as bridge between the state's law and Torah law, in light of the legal precedent set by the Israeli court’s recognition of the court and its findings.

“It is no coincidence that the hearing took place on the anniversary of the passing of Moses our teacher, the father of Hebrew law, and close to the days of Purim, when it is said that the Jews reaccepted and affirmed their commitment to the law of the Torah,” a statement from the court said.

After the verdict was read, the court's rabbis, wrapped in prayer shawls, stood and recited the special prayers accepting the justice of the Almighty, according to IsraelJustice.com: "Everyone in the courtroom followed in a loud chant to say the words, 'Hear O' Israel, the L-rd is our G-d, the L-rd is One,' despite an attempt by prison guards to prevent supporters, including Ruth Sariel, Tzvia's mother, from entering the hearing."

Following the hearing, the officials present from the Prisons Authority affirmed their commitment to carry out the verdict of the Sanhedrin court. Prisons' Authority warden Hila Furis reportedly told those present: “The Prisons' Authority recognizes the authority of the [Sanhedrin] court and will act to implement the verdict.” They removed Sariel's leg restraints and claimed she was being brought to the Ramle Magistrates court, where she would be released before the Sabbath.

Sariel was returned to Neve Tirza Prison, however, where she spent the Sabbath. Her parents say she has been placed in solitary confinement. Rabbi Ariel said the court would continue to follow the case and work for Sariel’s release, in accordance with the directives of the Netanya court.

The nascent Sanhedrin, headed by Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz, was established in 2004, with the renewal of Semikha (ordination) in order to create the infrastructure necessary to fulfill the Torah obligation of reestablishing the supreme Jewish legal body of 71 Torah scholars. The Court for People and State has been one of the most active projects of the nascent Sanhedrin.

The Sanhedrin court is not, as of yet, universally accepted, even among the many streams of observant Judaism. Those now participating are committed to stepping aside when greater or more prominent scholars take their seats.

Moderate Terrorist Planned Yeshiva Attack

It’s official. A “moderate” terrorist was responsible for the attack on the Yeshiva.

Yes, it was a member of Fatah.

It’s funny. I seem to recall that Fatah has been behind almost every terror attack to hit Israel in the past 15 years. I must be remembering wrong. After all, Rice tells us he is our friend!

Who am I to question Condi? Olmert never would.

But, just in case YOU would like to question Condi--here is a partial list of Fatah crimes, from my article, Good Cop/Bad Cop:

For brevity's sake, I'll just cover 2005-06 (you can go to the ADL website where I got the list if you want a more comprehensive rundown):
  • April 17, 2006: Nine people were killed and at least 40 wounded in a suicide bombing near the old central bus station in Tel Aviv. The Islamic Jihad and Fatah's Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades both claimed responsibility for the attack.

  • March 30, 2006: Four people were killed in a suicide bombing outside Kedumim. The Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades took responsibility for the attack.

  • October 16, 2005: Palestinian gunmen killed three Israelis and wounded as least five others in two separate drive-by shootings. The Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility.

  • August 28, 2005: A suicide bombing outside the Central Bus Station in Beersheba severely injured two security guards. Islamic Jihad and Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility.

  • July 23, 2005: Two people were killed and three others wounded in a drive-by shooting near the Kissufim Crossing. Islamic Jihad and Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility.

  • June 24, 2005: Two teenagers were killed and three others wounded in a drive-by shooting near Hebron. The Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade claimed responsibility.

  • January 13, 2005: Six Israelis were killed and five other civilians were wounded in a double suicide bombing at the Karni Crossing. Hamas and the Fatah's Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades claimed joint responsibility for the attack.
Nice group of friends, huh? Let's not forget to mention that the sweet man who runs Fatah, whose governance we are so happy to support, Mahmoud Abbas, has been linked to the murder of the eleven Israeli Olympic team members in 1972 (Daud, Abu. From Jerusalem to Munich, 1999).

Of course, I'm sure our government officials can excuse Mr. Abbas's youthful indiscretions; after all, it was just the beginning of Mr. Abbas's "political" experience, so we should give him a break, right? Mass murder is so passe, isn't it?

We can't expect them to remember every death, now can we?

JAFFA – The Israel Defense Forces today killed the man suspected of planning last week's Jerusalem shooting massacre in which eight yeshiva students were murdered, security sources said.

Just hours after the terrorist shooting, a WND report exclusively identified the planner of the attack, quoting senior Israeli and Palestinian security officials stating Muhammad Shehadi, an activist in Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah organization, set up the massacre from the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

Today, IDF forces raided Bethlehem on a hunt for Shehadi. They killed the Fatah official along with three other gunmen, including Ahmed Dalbul, a Bethlehem-area leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Fatah's declared military wing.

Israel's leading Yediot Aharonot daily and Channel 2 television here quoted security officials identifying Shehadi as the planner of the attack, the only mention of Shehadi by any media since last week's WND report. The Israeli media labeled Shehadi as an Islamic Jihad activist, even though he works for Fatah.

According to security officials speaking to WND, Shehadi was killed after the Israeli military received intelligence he was scheduled to attend a secret Fatah planning meeting in Bethlehem. Shehadi's Bethlehem area home was bulldozed by Israel last week, and he has been in hiding since.

Shehadi ran as a Fatah candidate in the 2006 Palestinian elections, but he lost.

He received financing from Hezbollah to plan last week's Jerusalem attack, according to senior security sources.

According to Palestinian security officials familiar with Shehadi, after losing the 2006 election as a Fatah leader, Shehadi worked for about six months for the Islamic Jihad terror group but then switched back to Fatah.

"He would go wherever the money was," said a Palestinian security official. "He thought he could get more money from Islamic Jihad, so he worked for them for a few months but then switched back to Fatah because he didn't like his Islamic Jihad salary."

Israeli security sources said Shehadi previously assisted in terrorist attacks carried out from the Bethlehem area by the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

Last Thursday, a terrorist gunman infiltrated the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva, located near the entrance to Jerusalem, and fired hundreds of rounds of bullets at students studying in the building's main library, killing eight students and wounding about a dozen.

Scenes of the yeshiva's blood-soaked floors and of bodies being lined up outside the yeshiva's library were broadcast on Israeli TV. Prayer books, torahs and Talmud texts stained with blood were carried from the building.

The head of the ZAKA emergency services – among the first to arrive at the yeshiva following the attack – described the scene as a "slaughterhouse."

The fatalities have been identified as Yochai Lipschitz, 18, of Jerusalem; Yonatan Yitzchak Eldar, 16, of Shiloh; Yonadav Chaim Hirschfeld, 19, of Kochav Hashahar; Neriah Cohen, 15, of Jerusalem; Roey Roth, 18, of Elkana; Segev Pniel Avihayil, 15, of Neveh Daniel; Avraham David Moses, 16, of Efrat; and Maharata Trunoch, 26, of Ashdod.
